David's Song of Deliverance

22
Chapter 22
1 And David spoke to the LORD the words of this song on the day when the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Sheol. 2 And he said, "The LORD is my Rock and my stronghold and my refuge." 3 God, my Rock—in him I take refuge, my Shield and horn, my salvation, my high place and my refuge, my savior. He saves me from violence. 4 From my distress I call to the LORD, and from my enemies I am saved. 5 For the breakers of death surrounded me; the torrents of Belial terrified me. 6 The cords of Sheol surrounded me; the snares of Death came before me. 7 In my distress I called to the LORD, and to my God I called. He heard my voice from his Temple, and my cry was in his ears. 8 Then it quaked and the earth shook; the foundations of the heavens trembled and quaked because it burned for him. 9 Smoke went up from his nostrils, and fire from his mouth consumed them; coals blazed from him. 10 He stretched out the heavens and came down, with thick darkness under his feet. 11 He rode on a cherub and flew, and he appeared on the wings of the Spirit of God. 12 He made darkness his covering, thick clouds of the skies full of water. 13 From the shining before him coals of fire burned. 14 The LORD thundered from heaven, and the Most High gave his voice. 15 He sent out arrows and scattered them; with lightning he thundered. 16 And the nostrils of the sea saw; the foundations of the earth were revealed from the rebuke of the LORD, from the breath of the wind of his nostrils. 17 He sent down from on high, he took me, he drew me out of many waters. 18 He saved me from my enemies, mighty one, from my haters, for they were stronger than me. 19 They confronted me in the day of my calamity, and the LORD was a support to me. 20 And he brought me out into a spacious place; he delivered me, because he delighted in me. 21 The LORD has dealt with me according to my righteousness, according to the purity of my hands; he will return to me. 22 For I have kept the ways of the LORD, and I have not been wicked toward my God. 23 For all his justices are before me, and as for his statutes, I have not turned aside from them. 24 And I was unblemished before him, and I kept myself from my iniquity. 25 And the LORD repaid me according to my righteousness, according to my purity before his eyes. 26 With the faithful you show steadfast love; with the mighty you are blameless. 27 With the pure you show yourself pure, and with the crooked you show yourself twisted. 28 You rescue the afflicted, but your eyes look down on the haughty and bring them low. 29 For you are my lamp, O LORD, and the LORD will illuminate my darkness. 30 For in you I run through a troop; in my God I leap over a wall. 31 The God—his way is blameless. You have said: the LORD is refined. He is a shield to all who seek refuge in him. 32 For who is God apart from the LORD, and who is a Rock apart from our God? 33 God is my stronghold and might, and he makes my ways perfect, blameless. 34 He makes my feet like those of deer, and he causes me to stand on my high places. 35 He trains my hands for war, and my arms can bend a bronze bow—my arms. 36 You have given me the shield of your salvation, and your right hand has upheld me. 37 You widen my steps beneath me, and my ankles do not stumble. 38 I pursue my enemies and destroy them, and I will not return until their destruction. 39 And I devoured them and crushed them, and they will not rise; they fell under my feet. 40 You girded me with strength for battle; you made my foes bow down beneath me. 41 You have given my enemies to me by the neck; from my haters, and I destroyed them. 42 They cried out, but there was no savior for them from the LORD, and he did not answer them. 43 I ground them to powder like the dust of the earth, like the mud in the streets. I pulverized them; I trampled them. 44 You delivered me from my controversies with my people; you made me head of nations; peoples I did not know will serve me. 45 Foreigners will submit to me; as soon as they hear me, they will obey. 46 The sons of foreign gods will wither and will come trembling from their enclosures. 47 The LORD lives! Blessed be my rock, and exalted be the God, the rock of my salvation! 48 The God who gives vengeance to me, and who brings peoples down under me. 49 And you who bring me out from my enemies and from my risers, you exalt me from a man of violences; you rescue me. 50 Therefore I will thank you, LORD, among the nations, and to your name I will sing praise. 51 He shows the greatness of the salvations of his king, and he does steadfast love to his anointed, to David and to his seed forever.
